The High and Mighty Tiger
Luxury is a state of being for many animals.
The one animal that truly incarnates this is the tiger- its coat, its eyes, its power, its stride and its indifference. Without forgetting its night prowling, the tiger awakens our fears and nourishes our fantasies even in our daily lives.
And yet, this creature is threatened with extinction and needs to be protected.
Of the remaining 3'500 tigers in the world, roughly half are found in India. The governmental Wildlife Institute of India has commissioned a census of the world's tiger population which will be known in November 2007. In 2001 the census counted 3,642 tigers.
Although the Indian government has set up over the last decades a resolute action of animal conservation, developing animal reserves in the diverse areas of this immense territory, the tiger population is still dying at a rate of approximately one tiger per day, and it is estimated that the tiger population will soon fall to 1500.
At least four of the 27 tiger reserves in India have no tigers whatsoever. The reason: deforestation and poaching. By comparison, in 1925, India counted 40'000 tigers!
A few beautiful safari camps or lodges are located in some of these national reserves, allowing the visitor to catch a glimpse or even get “close up and personal” with the High and Mighty Tiger.
You will need a bit of luck and lots of patience, in a Jeep or on the back of an elephant, but always under the watchful eye of a professional guide.
